Curbing Sacramento Traffic Deaths
The Sacramento City Council will vote to bring a Pedestrian Safety State of Emergency over the number of fatal pedestrian and cyclist crashes on city streets. Out of the 170 deaths this year, 18 were cyclists and 45 were pedestrians, according to the Sacramento County coroner's office. If approved, the state of emergency would require the city to run a number of public safety campaigns focused on distracted driving in addition to providing the public with regular updates on progress made. Sacramento Councilmember and current Vice Mayor Caity Maple drew up the proposal and explains how this state of emergency declaration would lead to a reduction in traffic-related deaths.
